Default Aphid Farmer

I spotted this action in my yard on a stem of a Lovage plant. The ant was getting honeydew from the aphids. There was also a guard ant at both ends of this group.

How did you go about shooting this? What were your settings? Did you use a tripod?

It was shot with my Nikon D50, hand held. I used a 50mm reversed lens on my camera. If I remember correctly the lens was at f/11 or f/16 and I used a flash attached to my hotshoe at 1/8 power.

For those that don't know; Ants find a colony of aphids and milk the waste plant sap from the aphids. In return the ants protect the aphids from predators and parasites. In some cases ants tend colonies almost like ranchers with their cattle, not only protecting the aphids, but moving them around from plant to plant.

Thanks for all the nice comments.
