Yes, I have an XTi...though I have never added anything really directly to the body of the camera itself aside from lenses, but Im assuming that 58mm is what you will need. If you look on Ebay, they have them for 10-20 dollars and they will say, "For Canon XTi or 400D"

i'd suggest spending the 100 or so and getting the kenko tubes. you will still have AF and a better build quality. they're stackable as well. here are some pics that i took with mine:

I don't think the autofocus is as important as being able to control the aperture from the camera , not to mention EXIF reporting. I have the Kenkos, and I really wish I'd gotten the Pro Optic set instead, since I have an EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro, and I can't mount it on the Kenkos (the Kenkos only take EF lenses). Not to mention the Pro Optic set is about $85.

Here's a shot of a quarter taken with the EF 50mm f/1.8 II mounted on all three Kenko tubes:

50mm with all three tubes stacked

I've put together a Flickr set demonstrating the tubes, a diopter lens, and lens reversal.

Thanks for the samples. Wow, on the close ups! I think I'll try the cheap tubes for now, and if I like the concept behind them, then I'll get the better pair. I just want to see if I prefer the tubes at the price, over the price of the macro lens, first. LoL. I know you guys have answered alot of my questions, not sure about the original poster.

Thanks.

I ordered the cheap extension tubes yesterday. $13 incl. shipping. Can't wait for them to get here. Will take a few weeks though.

If I like them, I might go for the more expensive Kenko ones later.

Good to hear you guys are going to give them a try.....
I was going to order some good high quality tubes and then one of the admins here said she just got them and they worked pretty good....so I gave it a shot.
I now saved a bunch of money..no need for the kenko's cause I don't care about the metering or the autofocus or whatever other benefit you get from them.....these work just fine for me, by the way the wait for these things practically drove me crazy so be ready to wait a good 2 weeks...lol. They are coming from hong kong....most likely.

I want to try to build me a lightbox and do some macro's in there. Those tubes will come handy. I'll share some shot's once I get them.

Oh gosh, I go crazy waiting for a 3-5 day delivery, but you warned me ahead of time, haha! So I will try to be patient, I don't want to get all excited until I've got them and gotten a successful photo from them! But I don't mind saving the money, this will hold over my want for my macro, hopefully for a long time! It's my fix... for now. Haha..

I have a friend on my myspace page, that made their own lightbox. Neat idea! I havent' tried it yet. Can't wait to see your shots!
