Default Which one is better?

Which one of these do you like better? And based on that choice I need help with THAT photo. I was trying to do something for the low light contest but I am having a dickens of a time.

How is the composition, even though the background is blurred it still seems to distract me. I like the texture of the onion (cuz you can see that its been around my kitchen for a while )

Any thoughts on what else I can do - this is one of the few times, I can re-do a shot, so please tell me what to do... Oh, these are straight out of the camera and both are cropped. I closed the curtains and turned off the lights in my dining room. I also wonder why the picture is brighter than the room actually was AND the flash did not go off...?

Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

I've moved this from critique, as it has two shots. I know it is not quite as close as true macro work but is still near enough that considerations like minimal depth of field are still a primary concern.

I prefer the first, which has a bit more space - perhaps a bit too much but it is easier to crop down than to paint in what you didn't include in the first place. However, it definitely calls out for some tweaking. The first thing I would consider is rotation as everything is leaning to the left. Get the table top perfectly flat and see how that feels - the other elements might need a reshoot (for example, you could balance the slight lean caused by the uneveness of the base of the onion by rotating the chair in the background so the slats go the other way).

So my darling husband threw away the onion b/c "it sprouted wings" so there is no way for me to reshoot this.

I personally like the second best, it shows more of the onion, less of the background, but I would have loved to see the other side of it. The greenery coming out of it, would have popped alot of color in there! Bummer for the throw away, that reminds me, I have sprouting tators we're gonna plant, definitely a photo opt. Haha..

Here is the other one that I took, but I did not like it as much... But it does show more green... And I have not done anything with it...

Wait a sec, this is off topic, but, you can plant sprouting potatoes? How long does it take to get new ones from the original? I will assume you can only do that it warm weather...

I like seeing more of the green, if it was me, I would crop, just because I like the more closer look of the photos. But awesome color in it!

Well, when tators are sprouted, you can cut the tator up in chunks, making sure there are sprouts on each chunk, then bury them into the ground. I am not sure on the length of time, I would think it's your normal 90 days kind of thing. Regular gardening weather. And when it's time for them, you dig them up.

It was actually humorous reading through this thread with potato sprouts and all...

I like your crop Pat. I like the vertical lines of the chair behind as they kept my focus where it should be and not even thinking about the onion being lopsided.
