Couldn't coment on it really i'm still a newbie so its hit and miss for me, get some really good portrait shots from it but not so good at the long end but i think thats down to me and a wobbly hand this shot was handheld though.

Quite sharp focus for handholding at 300mm, nice job.

On the larger photo you can notice the legs of the fly out of focus, this is caused by the shallow DOF on the telephoto setting. A smaller aperture (f/8 - f/16) should get those in focus for you but you will need to increase the ISO to keep the shutter speed fast enough for handholding. A better option is to use a tripod and accept the lower shutter speed if the subject is not moving. Use manual focus for this work.

Another tip is to use the fly's body as your focus point and not the wings. With a smaller aperture the increased DOF will get sharper focus 1/3 before and 2/3 behind your focus point. This should render more of the wings and legs in sharper focus for you.
