Default Macro tube rigging

I have seen on several threads people mentioning a macro tube rigging. Could someone please tell me what this is and how to do it. I am interested for my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 glass

Thanks

well im not sure exactly wat type of rigging but for 10 bucks on ebay you ca nget a set of three ring extension tubes which work great on the 50mm....which I have. No glass so there is not image degradation. Here is one of mine with the same set up.
toothbrush Closeup

Essentially just a tube between the lens and the sensor. however you will need some other light source to use it well....i use a sb-600 but im sure it can work with a shop lamp or a desk lamp thats got some good output...

Thanks for your reply. I think I'll give it a try, I also have a SB800 so it should be enough light.

The MACRO extension is a tube of different lengths that attach between the camera and the lens. What they do is to move the lens further from the focal plane (sensor or film) thereby forcing the lens to focus at a closer distance that it would normally do. This will increase the size of the subject; the longer the tube, the larger you can magnify the subject. It will also significantly reduce your DOF (depth of field) so proper use of aperture and critical focusing are very important. With some units, the autofocus may not work - however manual focusing during MACRO photography is highly recommended for better results.

This extensions produce quite nice MACRO results at very reasonable prices. You should certainly get one and experiment.
