close-up scientific photography : how much cost to get started ?

what type of camera would i need ? (brand,model,etc) ; ANY books you can recommend for a complete beginner in photography ? what is my biggest expense, camera ?, etc. about how much would it cost to get started and what would be my basic equipment, if i want to do my own developing ? should i go to digital or traditional film ? thanks
