Default Stumped with my Close up filters

Hi all,

I have a Canon Rebel T1i with standard 18x55mm lens, and along with Hoya 58mm close up filters, tried to do close up pictures. I adjusted the aperture, and shutter speed, but oddly would not come close to being a close up.
I was attempting to take pictures of flowers, to recreate a project from Photographic Magazine that Jim Zuckerman had done.
I am clearly missing something, and need your merciful help.

Thanks.

Krieg

You do know that you can stack the filters (there are usually three to a set +1, +2, +4) to obtain a diopter of +7? This will also make your DOF very shallow so you will have to stop down to f/11 and your shutter speed will be long depending upon whether or not you use additional light to get exceptable exposure.

I first used a +4, and then switched to a +1. The DOF was at 8, which may be why neither were working. I will try it later today with the DOF starting at f/11 and adjusting the shutter speed for proper exposure.

Thanks Jim for your help.

Krieg.

The main thing with close up filters is that they greatly reduce your minimum focus distance, this allows you to get within a couple of cm of the object and thus fill the frame with the detail you wish to explore. If the images aren't appearing as close-ups, I would guess that you're not getting close enough to the subject.

Guilty as charged. My neighbors were probably thinking I lost my marbles if they were watching me walk around with camera and tripod in hand today. Once I set the DOF, the macro mode, and was setup close enough the pictures started to be what I wanted. I have uploaded 4 of them. Take a look, and let me know what you think.

Thanks for your help.

Ah! I just got a set of +1, +2, +4 and a +10 filters, and was able to get all of them work focus on SOMETHING except the +10. I told my daughter shooting macro was harder than I thought. I'll have to try again with the +10, and see if getting closer helps.
