i think you've nailed a very important issue on the head, and one I always bring up to newbies (not saying you're one).
It's the issue of how can you be different from everyone else doing the same thing (ie macro). I went through the same phase (though I no longer do macro), and here are some examples I came up with: Flame Fork with lots of colors reflected in it Toothpicks Colored pencils The teeth of a serrated knife Lips Forgive the bad borders on some of them, I was going through a phase haha. Hopefully you'll get some inspiration from these.. And remember, lighting and backgrounds are just as important as a good subject, so give those some love (unlike me in most of the above). |

Have a look around you.. Anything that has interesting textures or shapes that make you want to look closer is ripe for macro.. This is what I can see right now that would make interesting photographs: Rusty rails, seeds, electronic parts, keyboard, headphones, sand and dirt, zips, springs, clear bulbs, paper with something written on it, pins and needles.. I got bored in an airport once, got my camera out and started taking macro photographs of my food.. It made everyone think I was crazy, but it made the time pass quickly, and oddly enough, when I went to get some desert, they gave me a huge portion and put it all on the plate in a nicely decorated way and didn't charge me for it.. I think they thought I was going to send the pictures to customer services or something.. He he..

Try the electrical components you mentioned in the OP. That's something that apparently interests you and what interests you makes the best macro subject. Then go from there.

I think (like has been said before) it's about finding something with interesting texture. A few examples of mine that I like:
