Post Potential Stupid Question Inside!

Hello everyone,

I was just surfing this website and saw many different macro photographs in one of the sections. I saw pictures in some of the threads which kind of contradicted all that I thought macro was. Pondering to myself, I was then hit with the question, "What defines a macro photo?"

I used to have a macro setting on my old point-and-shoot camera, which was pretty cool. Since I bought my DSLR, I don't have a macro lens (unless the 35mm f/1.8 is considered as one, then I'm messed up all over again, haha!)

Anyway, so when I use a shallow DOF with that lens, does it still count as macro photography? I saw pictures in that section which kinda contradicted all that I thought macro was.

Someone help this poor noob, please! Hahaha!

A macro lens and extension tubes?

I usually say 1:2 and higher is macro.

Shallow depth of field has nothing to do with macro; its simply a result of the focal length and aperture. I usually shoot at f/11-f/16 which is still not enough in many cases.

This thread may help.

'Macro' = 1:1 ?? What does this really mean

If you are on a budget, and still want to use a DSLR, you may find this thread interesting.

Two other alternatives are
(1) A macro lens - very convienient.

(2) A P&S camera with a "macro" setting may meet your needs for very close (flowers etc)

They are pretty neat, I used to be a big fan.

They went weird on me though... Although it was cool as hell to see them with David Helfgott!
