Default Macro Lens for Nikon?

Hi everybody.
I've been wanting to purchase a macro lens for my Nikon D40 for a while, but I'm really unsure of what to buy.
Can anyone give me some good advice or something?
Thanks!

Sabine

These are the lens I found on Nikon's site for Macro Photography. What body do you have? What is your budget? What will you take macro pictures of mostly?

AF Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8D from Nikon
AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED from Nikon
AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR from Nikon
AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED from Nikon
AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED from Nikon
AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED from Nikon

Non AF
Micro-NIKKOR 55mm f/2.8 from Nikon
Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8 from Nikon

Hi Sabine,
I have been using a Tokina 100mm f2.8 which I absolutely love. I looked at the various lenses available for my Nikon but most were just too much money for me.

I still haven't felt confident enough in my work to post any pictures with this lens.

Nikonians has a good comparison guide on the various Macros.

Best of luck!

I use the Sigma 150mm f/2.8. I have found it to be an outstanding lens in all respects.

Murtasma: I have a nikon D40, and my budget is sort of tight, but I'm saving up. :-)
I mostly take want-to-be macro pictures of flowers and stuff, and I've tried insects but my lens just doesn't cut it, and I really want to take pictures of insects!

Thank you very much for the help everyone! :-)

Using macro lenses, you will be able to get extremely close to the subject and reveal details that you previously couldn't see. You can take close ups of insects or make some really abstract images by taking pictures of everyday items.

In case you haven't bought one yet I can really recommend Tamron 90 mm.

I'm researching the same and so far, the one at the top of my list is the Tokina 100mm:

Tokina 100/2.8 ATX Digital Ready 1:1 AF-D Macro Lens for Nikon
