Feeling a bit stupid but, i tried for the first time this afternoon macro photography and to be honest i'm struggling. I tried to do the water droplets on the cd shot as set out in the how i took it department and failed, i can get the lighting right and with experimentation i can get the shot, what i'm struggling with is the distance to the water drops, Using a Sigma 105 in manual i just cant seem to get close enough and then of course if i'm too close cant focus blah blah, my question is i think, is the lens to long and would fitting tubes to it help or simply do i need a shorter lens or is the obvious about to slap me in the face. Your help and kind advice would be grateful

I got a set of cheap extension tubes the other day (Pro Optic Budget Auto Extention Tube Set @ $47.95 + S&H) and I have been having fun with them. Too soon to give a proper critique of the equipment, but my camera does kind of freak out, if I try to stack all three of them on plus a lens. So far I have only used manual focus with my nifty fifty, so I can't even tell you if auto-focus will work with them on the camera. They definitely eliminate the distance problem though.
