ohhhh... yeah, they are quite precise when it comes to focusing. You can use multiple filters at the same time and it tends to have a smaller focus area the more you use at once.

there are 3 methods... all with the 50mm
  • is having one of your lenses attached to your camera and hand holding a 50mm prime lens against the lens attached to your camera so both front elements are facing each other (hardest method.. plus chance of scratching your lenses..)
  • second is getting a attachment to attach to the front of both lenses.. the threads being male /male (eliminates the scratching of lenses)
  • 3rd option is getting a Reverse Lens Macro adapter to fit your camera with a male thread so you can attach the 50mm prime in reverse to your camera.. with no other lenses

All of these require a very steady hand .. or tripod.. i have tried this with no tripod and hand held a 50mm to my sigma 70-300mm with these as a result

i will find more info if you wish

Ah, so that's the cheap way to do it, I've always heard about people doing this, but never quite how, something to possibly try out I think

Has anyone actually had any luck trying to find something like this in a store? I went in to the local camera store that sells the most stuff and they looked at me like I was trying to find a 3 headed purple llama . Something tells me that if I try to actually find this I'll have to order online. I did try it handheld, and was surprised with how well it works if you're patient, though Leisa, you must have the most stable hands to have gotten those shots handheld!!

My attempt was only at photographing something that was handy, which happened to be a sheet of paper:

Nicole, Dear Nicole.

Ebay is your friend

They have reverse mount adapters by the thousand on the Aus site of Ebay for Canons - I am not sure for other brands.

I ended up with a screw on macro lens - it is a pain at times - interesting to play with though! I can change any lens I use (eg, even use my 300) to get what effect I want.... I agree, a REAL macro lens would be better, but I want some other lenses first - Macro really is just playtime for me, where as I want a good constant appeture lens first (and at about $900 for the one I want......... Not to mention a speedlite, etc all first)

So after all that mumbling, what I am saying is you still get a good shot - it is just harder to do - but for $30 compared to $350 - it expands my horizons and hobby, for a much friendlier price

Ahh, well - good luck then!

I would wish for one, but I know Santa has a 50M prime lens so I can do better portraits and DOF work - and also a 5 week course with a professional photographer!

If your willing to sacrifice your body cap and your lens cap. You can build a nice macro lens with a pringles tube. You get a snack and a macro lens at the same time!!!!

http://www.photocritic.org/2005/macr...y-on-a-budget/

This guy explains what I mean. I've done this for film photography as I have TONS of caps.

The only thing he forgot to do is spray paint the inside/outside of the can Flat black! He is having a blur problem because of the light bouncing around the inside of the can. It could be reduced by using a a Flat black spray paint with very, very light coats. and make sure it's completely dry! I would also do that before you glue the body cap on!

I'd heard of the Pringles can idea, but hadn't yet seen it implemented. I may have to give that a go. It helps that I have an old 50mm lens for my film SLR with an aperture adjustment ring on it.

thanks for the link!
