Default What is your Macro Lens/Technique for Wedding Photography?

Hi!

My main reason for posting is because I am ultra curious about what macro lenses everyone uses for wedding photography. A good example would be to get the rings in a nice pic alone without it looking like there is too much space around them. This is not the only reason I am interested in a macro lens, as I love to take detailed macro type shots at events and family parties, but I really want that close of a focus - so it is a good example . I am hoping you could maybe post a picture of say rings, and tell me what lens you used. I am going to rent a lens for the wedding, since buying is not an option at this point. Hopefully you can make my decision easier.

Thank you in advance for all your help!!

Lena

P.S. I will mostly be using my D90, but I have my D40x that I will make use of as well so I do not have to change lenses. I will more than likely have the macro on the D40x.

You don't need a macro to get the shot you are talking about. Your 18-135 should do the job nicely. A lot of photgraphers shoot this with the bride and grooms hands over the boquet so you end up with a nice background. There may be one or two shots in a wedding where a macro would come in handy, but the idea of renting and carrying a lens just for a couple of shots doesn't make sense. Your job is to capture people, expressions, reactions and the spirit of the event; none of which requires close up detail. What I don't see in your list of equipment is lighting; that's where I would be spending my time and money if I were you.

This is not the only reason I want a macro. It was just an example of what I was looking for in a macro. The rings, in particular are small enough where it was a great example. I personally find that hand on the boquet type shot tacky. I do use that shot, because in the end it is not about what I like, however I also do other closer shots of the rings that everyone seems to like more. Again, it was just an example of why I wanted a better macro lens. I just cannot get close enough IMO with my current lens...
