Default Maximizing a non macro lense

How to get the closest shots, with good dof and high definition. Thoughts?

If a true macro lens is out of your budget, try a Macro filter kit
example:

nice photo, like the dof, love ur Carroll Creek too. heard bout these filters too, but probably gonna try and save money for a macro

Thanks for ++ feedback. Gonna save, kinda a purist, don't like to touch up too much either. Only changed frame in Photoshop Elements on the worm one.

If you look over the posts in Critique, compared to those here in Macro Photography, you can see how yours is better suited here. Lots of sections, I know, can get a little confusing. Not to worry, we'll shift things around if it helps to get your answers.

For a low-budget solution to your question, you can DIY a magnifying glass and flash to get shots like these:
