Default Gin & Tonic

Canon S2 IS 1/250s 6.0mm f8.0
This is an older shot that I particularly like. I didn't have any particular set up at the time other than natural light, hand held and did a little cropping and small colour curve. I haven't been able to replicate this since getting my 'grownup' Dslr! I would love to know if there is a secret to the exposure that I could use with my D80? I am also always interested in ways to improve what I am doing particularly with DOF and composition.
Thanks for looking

How close have you got? You should be able to equal and better the image, as long as you don't drink too many of G&Ts during the set up...

If I were going for a shot like this, I would be aiming to get the subject more sharply focused and I might also experiment with getting the straw running through the two opposite corners and putting the liquid line 1/3 of the way from the top, for a very precise looking result.

Thanks for the advice Wulf. Its a problem maintaining focus when you have consumed a few! The 18-200 can't get as close as the S2 but I would hope I can get a better focus using tripod and bearing in mind your hints.
