wood with nails

I have only recently commenced playing around with macro, but I am enjoying the challanges.
I have been experimenting with different textures,
I am using a 18-55 lens, am currently doing research on buying a macro lens.
I need to know, am I on the right track, I see so many great macro shots on this site, you think WOW, I want to be able to do that.

Exif
Canon 350D
ISO: 100
Shutter Speed:1/16 sec
Aperture: f/8
Focal Length: 50.00mm

Thanks
