This was taken with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. I'm looking for some advice on what I could have done to better the image.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Exposure: 1/1600 Aperture: f/3.2 Focal Length: 50 mm ISO Speed: 1000 Flash: No Flash

Other than the fact that it looks a little bland with regard to contrast and needs a sharper focus, I would say that it bothers me, compositionally, to not see the end of the icicle, as it falls off the page. Perhaps a different angle where you really see the drama of the icicle and how it formed, would help. The tip of the icicle generally brings some tension to a shot like this.
My two cents!

A little bit more color variation and a different angle. As stated above, why not include the end of the ice and omit the couple distracting branches above. Also the branches at bottom right (the ones that are not enough out of focus) kinda distract me (hence the different angle i proposed)
Edit: You can also try black and white

Hi There,
I'm doing a school project where I have to critique people's pictures, so I chose to get a double whammy out of it and actually post my critique to help others improve their photography. My critique might sound a little odd as I'm presenting it to a teacher, but here we go: Exposure: Well the exposure is pretty good on this pictures as you didn’t over expose the white in the ice. Focus: This is really my biggest beef with this picture. I feel bad because, personally, I think this picture is so close to being absolutely superb, but it is just lacking that finished and focused flair. Depth of Field: This ties into the focus as you didn’t get your focus on the right twig. Your focus is torn between the first twig and the second one. A different angle would have allowed you to get the proper DOF by removing the busy background. Centered vs. Rule of Thirds: The position is centered in the frame, which works quite well for this photo. Feeling: Almost there. Is this scenery still there? If so go out and take the shot again going from a different angle to remove the background. I’m almost getting chills from this picture, but you’ve just got to get that busy background out and the twigs at the bottom. Also, get make sure to complete all the iciciles. Hope this helps, James |
