Default sea shell by the sea shore

This is my first critique, so not planning to sell! (i make bad jokes...)

beach3

I'm still trying to figure out my camera, and working to program my auto and adjust using M A S P modes.

Camera: Nikon D90
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 105 mm
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: No Flash

Any suggestions for improvements in terms of settings? composition? too stark? perhaps a little too centered? I did not do any adjustments at all to it... please feel free to work with it. Thanks! -T

I like the simplicity of your subject and the slight reflection underneath. However, I wonder if holding your camera in landscape rather than portrait as well as not centering your subject, would make it more interesting.

Think about different ways to shoot this subject. Do you want a closeup to show the patterns and detail of the shell or do you want to back up a bit to include the feeling of vastness of the beach or the loneliness of the subject? If you are interested in detail, make sure you get it in focus and consider some contrast to highlight the patterns.
