Red face Autumnal Shot

Hi,
I recently got my first DSLR, a Sony a330 with a standard 18-55mm lens in order to ease myself into proper photography.
I managed to get out on a clear sunny day and here is the pick of the crop.
With it being my first post to the forum I would just like to know your thoughts and if there are any areas you see that could be improved (PS: I know im not supposed to ask a question as vague as that but I don't see what could be wrong with it/where I could improve, unlike you experienced lot )

Settings
f-stop - f/5.6
exposure - 1/400
ISO - 100
focal length - 55mm
(Anything else?)

Thanks

Welcome to DPS! I will give just my initial feedback, tho I am no pro myself, but offhand I would say that you did well with exposure, but compositionally, it needs some better focal points to really draw your eye to the subject. This is partially because you have no one clear focal point, but rather a group of leaves--and also because your background is competing mightily with the foreground in terms of busy-ness. Try making sure your background is more monochrome compared to your subject, and then really isolate one particularly pleasing focal point.

Nice start, though. Keep it up!
