lighting problem in plant shot

I would appreciate any comments and suggestions on improving the lighting here; the composition is what I wanted (the plant with it's hard shadow in the morning light of our kitchen) but the lighting of the plant's leaves and the colors are not what I wanted at all. I wanted a much more vibrant green. Yes, I can fix it in PS, but would like any suggestions for getting it better in camera.

Did you try different white balance modes? Try something a touch cooler, which will prevent so much excess red and yellow in the resulting image. Also, the image as a whole is overexposed. A different white balance mode may have some effect on this but you need to tweak the exposure down as well. If you are on aperture priority mode, that will mean changing the exposure compensation.
