Default Macro orchid shot from a newbie



New at this. Well, I have always likes taking pictures, but now I am trying to learn. I know nothing. How is the composition, DOF, etc?

Lighting and focus is good, and the colors are nice.

The only thing I would suggest (to see how it looks) is cropping the top of the picture a little tighter to increase the aspect ratio to give it a little more of a panoramic feel. Just a thought.

Hi Judi, welcome to the forum. That's a very nice macro shot of phal. Since the flower is obviously the subject of the image I would like to see all of it in focus (if possible). You used an aperature setting of f/5.6, I would have bumped that to at leaste an f/11.0 to increase the depth of field. Otherwise it is a great shot, good use of lighting and color.

A good way to start that is to switch to Aperature Priority Mode with a shot like this. You choose the aperature you want and the camera will adjust the shutter speed to create the proper exposure. Before you do take the shot, check the speed and make sure you can hand hold the camera without causing any shake or blur. Hope that helps.
