Cool Flame Painted Rose

The only PP work I did was to put a border and my signature on it. Other than that I didn’t do any thing else to it.

How I went about getting the shot;

I picked up a large yellow rose, placed it in a vase. Made the room pitch black, used a remote to trigger the camera than light my lighter and slowly moved the lighter around. This is one of the better shots that I got. I’m open to any comments, or questions that you may have. Tell me what you think of the color, layout, and concept. Maybe you can tell me why this shot didn’t go over well in the Share Your Shot section.

Yellow Rose

Camera: Nikon D60
Exposure: 5.5 sec (11/2)
Aperture: f/5
Focal Length: 34 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

I like the picture itself, but the border does not work for me. It really takes away from the shot since it is brighter, and draws my eye away from the rose.

As far as the rose itself goes, it is a double edged sword (thorn?).
It has perfect focus, depth, detail, with a great blacked out background.

However, being top down, as are most rose shots, it also is a common shot, that while perfect, doesn't in itself stand out.

A very creative way to light it, but just looking at the shot one would never know that you went through such lengths to get the shot.

First, I agree with everything KodiacStar said, except I think it could still "stand out". A really good rose picture may never be considered great art but they are usually "appreciated".

Light painting is a neat idea....not sure about using a lighter. I think it may have given an orange color cast.

The other thing about a "perfect rose" picture, the rose needs to be "perfect". This rose is an "in-between". Dark creases and tears but nearly perfect in the center. Without the frame and "tattered" outer petals I think it would be received much better. Completely tattered for "something different" might also be very interesting.

Your technique for getting the shot is really interesting! Thanks for sharing it.

I don't especially care for the border here, either. The rose itself seems a funny color, which might be more interesting if the other shade of yellow in the border wasn't there to compare it to.

I also agree that the rose should be blemish free. Maybe let it blossom a bit more then take the outer petals off and try again!

Thank you KodiakStar, sk66, and dlaf. Okay I got rid of as many of the bad petals as I could. I felt if I took any more, I would start to ruin the look of the rose. So I did a little more Photo Shoping on this one, hope it isn't to much. I also changed the layout and tried to add more DoF. I think this one looks better. But there is alittle to much light on the rose.
