Default Green Dropped Rose

Another rose for you critiquers! I was given a tip on another part of this forum, that playing around with a water spritzer and food colouring can enhance pale blooms - so here is my offering.

As usual, any valuable critique always appreciated. I really want to know what you all think - good and bad, can it be improved - if so how? I've learnt so much in such a short space of time from you all it's been brilliant. Far more, in fact, than the club I belong to at home!

Again, as with most of my posts, this was done using a home made light cube lined with black velvet. Camera set on a tripod using a remote shutter.

Shutter speed - 0.7sec
F22
Max aperture value - F2.8
ISO 100
Focal length - 100mm
Flash - not fired
Metering mode - pattern (what is this?!)

Thanks in advance

janef,

One of those mysteries at DPS: sometimes no one stops by and leaves you a note. Often it's the subject (how different will this rose be?) or the attachment (used to take forever to go to another site) that causes the skip.

I'm pleased by the subtlety of the green; had you not described it, I wouldn't have guessed at added coloring. The grayness overall, though, could easily come alive if you boost lightness (on Adobe PhotoDeluxe, this is different from "brightness"), and a little contrast after. Done slowly, you won't lose detail, and the shot will gain an outdoor clarity.

Cropping this way, three sides unevenly cut off, and the third just touching the side, is a little distracting, compared to a shot where all the petals show, and none touch the frame. Or crop so it's obvious you wanted a closeup of the center.

Good work.

Thanks Jiminy - as always I value your critique and learn from your expertise.

On the subject of these small images and possibly the reason for people skipping past them. Please tell me, my pics always come up as thumbnails, never a large image with my text. Why? I upload these into Flickr, copy the link for the medium sized image and they still come up as a thumbnail attchment? Where the earth am I going wrong - someone please help!

Ok, I see. I've changed it somewhat, as you suggested - now how does it feel?

Jane,

When you link to your photo, use the insert link icon (globe with chain link), not the attachments option (paperclip).

janef,

Are you seeing a difference you like? It must make sense to you and feel right, so that you are more likely to develop a style of your own while following some basics of composition, framing, tone, etc. I like it now, so that's three.
