Default Bloody Critique, have a butchers at this

Can I get some opinions on this.

There is something very specific I'm looking for feedback on, but I don't want to taint your thought process and put the idea there.

I realise that the watch is scratched and needs to be worked on and that the front numbers are soft. But if you could give your technical thoughts that would be great cheers and here's hoping it doesn't get booted out of critique for being too vague.

Guest link to bigger version and exif is here:

In fact, EXIF is here, feedback on making it sharper welcome.

ISO 100
200mm (70-200mm 2.8 on APS-C)

... oh wait, I know how to make it sharper never mind, thought this one wasn't at 200mm

The image is marked as private on Flickr, so I can't see it any bigger than what's posted here.

I will say, the dead white space on the right, plus that triangle of white in the top left corner distracts me from the watch itself. I'd rather see it on a black background so the silvery detail of the watch pops more.

I also think I'd like it more if it was shot vertically and the corners of the watch face weren't cut off.

Blacks are black and whites are white, with good exposure of the rest.

Highlighting on the metal works pretty well, though I think I'd like the lower highlight on the bezel further around to the right (minor point). Nice work on avoiding speculars from the crystal.

I don't like the mix of black and white backgrounds. Either could work, but using both draws attention away from the watch.

I agree about the crop on the watch. It's too tight both on top and bottom.

I say it looks good over all. kind of looks like it's going to be used as an ad photo. I think it would be better looking on an all black background personally. I like the way its positioned though. .. there's my 2 cents fwiw

Thank you all, certainly take those points on board. It's really just a test shot so of no "great" importance, however, the idea is that this, and others, are going to be used as header images on my new website. The empty space on the right will have text tags in - just to ease your mind boomer

I put it out there as I felt there was a magenta color cast across the top of the watch. I know a lot of you spot things like that so wanted to see if it was an issue or just me :P

Thanks again! I'll experiment with your suggestions later today and throw in the results

I see the same magenta cast now that you mention it, but I thought it was just a metal color issue. In either case, it doesn't bother me.

yep, a slight color cast. IMO, don't remove it, or at least not all of it. Stainless that is black/white looks "fake" IMO. Inreality the color cast *should probably be* bluer "shadow".

See

So did you notice it because it's "there" or did you notice it because I mentioned it?

I guess more of because you mentioned it becuase it looks "natural" as opposed to no color cast.
