Default Sunflower - detail

Hi all. Brand new here.

Canon T3i
50mm
f 2.8
1/100th
ISO 100
Aperture priority
Handheld

The patterns in the middle of the flower looked interesting to me. Is the flower OK in the center? I like the pink flowers in the background, but do they distract? Thanks for any thoughts!

I think you need to get much, much closer if you want to show the sunflower detail (as in your title). The other flowers detract from your subject. It looks a little overexposed and the focus looks soft (hard for me to tell at this size) ... try getting a lot closer next time, maybe even cropping out some of the sunflower to focus on the interesting center ...

Closer, MUCH closer... it has potential but you need alot more personal look at the flower to appreciate the patterns of which you speak.

Default A closer crop

Here's a closer crop. Is this more like it? Looks like the focus goes soft on the right side, though.

Much better! It looks 'soft' on the right side because it is out of focus, but that's not a bad thing. You have a wide open aperature (low number) which means it's got a shallow depth of field. If the left side of the flower wasn't so over exposed you could crop the photo with more of the left side in the frame instead. Considering the original photo, I think you've cropped it ok. The pink flowers in the background are too distracting.
Keep trying.
