Default Flower Close up

Hi Folks,

This is my first post in the Forum and just wanting some feedback.

Took the shot on Flickr as one of many and looking for any advise as to how it could be improved. I am thinking along the lines of a tighter crop but not sure how this would look. I used an off camera flash so that there were no shadows on teh background since I don't have a studio facility.

Any thoughts gratefully accepted.

Thanks,
Jerry.

Hello - I think you'd get more comments if you posted your picture on the site instead of a link. I did go to the trouble of looking -- the lighting seems flat, you achieved your goal of no shadows on the the background but left no detail in the flowers. As far as a crop goes, yes I think less blank background would be better.

Hi
I am new here, so I hope I get all the protocol right

Unless there is a point to it I don't like to see "support structures" (string, stake) in flower pictures; and if there is a point of having it in this particular photo I don't "get it" :-). So, I would definitely remove those before shooting or worst case remove them in post editing, although removing the string will leave the leaves in a funny position .

I also feel the 2 most open flowers (i.e your main focus) seem to be "split" by some low light, uninteresting buds. I would have perhaps turned the plant a little ccw to have the main flower more front on with the space in the middle decreasing and the second flower coming (visually) closer to the main flower. I would perhaps then play with DOF to get the main flower sharp and the flower behind a little out of focus.

I would crop this image *hard*.

Maybe there is another colour background that would be more flattering for the red? The bg isn't "bad", I just think something else may be better?

I have never used an off camera flash, but perhaps you could point it somewhere else so it reflects and the light is not so "hard" on the flower, or maybe, if your camera has that option, play with your flash compensation button (I couldn't find any data on the image - maybe I didn't look in the right place).

Just some ideas.

Hi all, just a quick note, if you click on the 'Actions' buton just above the photo, then click on 'View EXIF Info"

:-)
