Not sure if I like this or not - and I'm scottish.. so I should!

I think thats why it doesn't sit right for me either.. I also took this but I didnt manage to get it all in focus.. need to figure out how to use my camera better

This is a good shot!! the focus on the thistle is crisp and the composition is excellent, with the subject sitting off centre. As far as improvements go, I would suggest dropping the aperture down to f4 or so to drop the background into a blur. But that's a minor issue.

I notice that you used the same focal length in both shots, yet the second is a closer crop. This suggests that you moved closer to the flower for the second. If you look closely at the flower, the purple section is leaning towards the camera and it is this bit which is out of focus. You're lens has a closest focussing distance (written on the barrel of the lens beside the macro flower symbol) usually about 0.45m for a standard kit lens. If you try and get closer to your subject than this distance you will never get it in focus. Instead try zooming in a little.
