New to the forum and photography. I have been reading through the topics and quite frankly the technical side is hurting my head
![]() I have a comfort zone: P & ISO 100 Had I been brave enough to turn the dials, could I have improved on this? I love macro photography and hoping to improve. Any pointers would be appreciated. 1. Is it to soft? not enough focus? 2. Should I have used flash? I didnt want as loved the early morning light on this and the bud shots also in this set. 3.Any tips on how I could've improved this shot with regards to composition, perhaps different angle on the twirl or made the rain water more of a feature? ![]() ..... Camera Canon PowerShot G12 Exposure 0.017 sec (1/60) Aperture f/3.5 Focal Length 6.1 mm ISO Speed 100 Exposure Bias 0 EV

I like the photo, and saw it had a lot of potential, but needed a bit of work.
I hope you don't mind, but I needed to actually get this in to Photoshop to see what I would do with it. Using your original, I saw (by using the histogram) that you were a little short on the darks (maybe a half to full stop less exposure in the camera?) so I added a bit. I also did a slight "unsharp mask" to bring the sharpness up slightly. There were also areas that were blown out (again, reducing the exposure might have helped here as well) so I removed them through cropping, something I would have done in any case. This brought more focus to the swirled part and removed a bit of the superfluous background. ![]() (For some reason, this forum is showing it brighter than it actually is ... if you right click and then select VIEW IMAGE you may see it a bit more as I saved it.) Again, this is my vision of the picture and you and others may totally disagree which is great. This is art and there are no right and/or wrongs. Everyone can see the same thing differently.

Thank you!
This feedback helps me immensely.. Photo look so much better! It certainly brings out the red edging on the leaves and swirl. I have no problem with you tweaking it, infact I found it quite flattering someone would take the time to do so. It has given me the confidence to use your advise and see if I can perhaps improve on my other photos. I've only started playing with my editing software this week and have never done much more than crop.. Got a bit carried away with myself when I figured out how to straighten out the horizons on my sunset shots Thank you once again

Glad you liked it ...
My best advice to you in general at this point is to have fun with it. Don't be afraid to try anything. Don't worry and remember the one you really have to impress is you. Great picture - have fun!
