Default Bug in daisy - judging too harshly?

Daisies 010take 2Flickr

Camera Fujifilm FinePix S1500
Exposure 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture f/2.8
Focal Length 5.9 mm
ISO Speed 100
Exposure Bias 0 EV

I think the focus on this is way too soft. (Especially the focus on the bug.) But, going through Explore on Flickr this morning I found shots that, in my opinion, aren't much different than this.

So, am I right in my original assessment that this is junk, or am I judging pictures too harshly and this is fine?

I had a quick look through flickr photostream, you have some good macro/close up work there that ticks all the boxes, this one to me looks like you are pushing the limit of your camera.
Keep up the good work

Cheers Jo

I like "pushing the limits of my camera" better than "junk". :-) But it pretty much confirms what I thought about it.

Thank you for the compliment. I'm trying to get better, but I've got a ways to go.

Steve

I do think that it looks really soft, I think it could use some more Sharpness.

You are right, its junk. Its too soft, no real focus to look at and its a boring image in that even the colors are muted. You commented that there are other shots on Flickr that "aren't much different than this"... does that mean you're striving to achieve only what is posted on Flickr? Go check out 500pix for a little higher goal....

Does nothing for me. Not all bugs are the same, some make better subjects than others. Too soft, nothing to catch the eye. Maybe a lot closer (macro instead of closeup) to actually focus on the details of the bug would be better or move back to see the flower. To me there just isn't a subject here. It has to be either the bug or the flower and the image doesn't do either justice.. Just my 2 cents..

I guess I have more work to do. Thank you all for your honesty.
