I should say that I have been doing photography since the end of April, and I welcome any insight that more experienced folks here can give me.

Cheers

It may be a product of having to resize the image for post here, but my only concern is that the eyes appear to be soft. In portrait work, irrespective of the subject, it's imperative to have the eyes sharp.

I second autofocus's comment; the reason, it seems, is that the nose was the focal point rather than the eyes.

I will also add that the eyes should be lower down in the photo.

I hear you on the focal point comments. My biggest challenge was that, well, I had a camera in her face (quite literally) and it took about 40 shots to get the kind of "look" that I was going for. Believe me, I definitely want the eyes to be the highlight of the shot. Thank you for the feedback! I welcome any and all!

The trick is timing, a relatively fast shutter, and focus selection on the eye (do not use center focus and recompose technique)

A note about the cat below: she was a customer's cat that was hanging around while we were shooting the kids...couldn't resist a tight shot of her which I tightened up even more with the crop you see here

If I may ask, what kind of setup were you using? I love the sharpness of the eyes. What I was trying to get from my subject was a sort of up close, eyes hidden slightly by the brow, "big cat" look to the face. As I mentioned previously, I was using an extension tube (I have yet to be able to spend the $$ on a dedicated macro lens), and I want to get as much magnification as is reasonable.

A side note, sadly, this cat now shuts her eyes anytime I get close with the camera, because she anticipates the flash. Again, I welcome any advice! Thanks so much for the input so far!

Nothing special on the setup. Here's the Exif info:

CameraNikon D300
Exposure0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperturef/7.1
Focal Length38 mm
ISO Speed400
Exposure Bias0 EV
FlashOn, Return detected

Flash was an SB800 on camera, bounced.
