Default Chocolate Chip Cookies

Aspiring Food Photographer

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi
190.0 mm
manual
ISO 100
f/5.0
1/40
natural light from window with reflector used to bring light into the shadows

How can I make this shot more pleasing?
What can I do to show the texture in the cookies better?
It feels flat to me- Would there be anything technically that I'm lacking?

Thanks!

Think of the cookies as you would a bride and light it that way. The light is overpowering the subject so a gobo or diffuser would help to cut down the brightness or harshness depending on your intention. Also, shooting at 190mm and F/5 gives you a pretty small DOF, so much so that the front chocolate chip is soft. Bring it down to 85mm and F/8 or F/11. Knockdown the natural light and add a dramatic fill to kiss the cookie just enough to make it pop out of the frame at you.
