Default A bugs view

I can see the background takes away from the pic. How do compensate, if I crop I'll take away from the pic. I'm new to post production, is there a way to darken the background only? I'm using GIMP.

Love the shot

I'm not familiar with GIMP but may be you could at a blur to the back ground.

1) You could make a new layer of just the leaves by using the Free Select Tool, then mess with the layer that is the background (that would take some time though, you would have to use the tool on the gaps in the leaves as well).
2) You could just blur the background w/ the smudge tool on low opacity, and use the dodge and burn tool (set on burn, if you want it darker) to make it less noticable. Adjust the opacity.
There are probably much easier ways to do this, but I've been using these, and it seems to have a good effect if used properly...

Probably the bug looked much better if the picture was taken from a different angle.
