Default Flower

I'm still getting use to my camera and my macro lens. I really like this photo but was wondering if the photo should be lighter. I haven't made any adjustments outside of the camera, as I am trying to learn how to make them with the camera first. So my questions:

1. Should the photo be lighter

2. Do you like the composition. Should I have focused more on the middle of the flower or do you like how the middle of the flower is off to the side in the shot.

To me the photograph appears to be underexposed, severely on the left hand side.
It also doesn't appear to be real sharp.
I don't think the flat lighting really helps at all.

If the pic is ok technically off centre compositions can work well.
That's an artistic decision.

Looks like a pop-up flash was used, in which case the flash over shot the subject. If the lens had a lens hood on try the shot with it off, this MAY help, but a 100mm lens is rather close to the subject for a pop-up. I have in a pinch used a pop-up with my 150mm macro without the lens hood and it worked.

If a shoe mounted flash was used, remove the hood, if that does not work you will need to off camera mount the flash on a bracket. This is the one that I have.

These are the settings that I use for macro flash photography: camera set to manual, shutter speed 1/250 sec (or what ever the x speed is for your camera) iso 100-200, f 11-14, flash set to ETTL then adjust the output to need.

Just something to keep in mind, at f stops above 16 you start to run into image quality problems the smaller the aperture gets.
