Default Yellow rose

Hi guys,

here's a image of a beautiful yellow rose. Please critique my tehnique and composition.

Exif data: f18, 1 sec, ISO 400. Canon EOS 1000D with the kit lens + closeup lens.

This may sound harsh but it is not meant to be.
Crop most of the black out. The colour of the rose is 'flat'. I do not know if you did pp on the photo or not, but I suggest you do saturation and more importantly levels and smart sharpening. The rose looks soft (out of focus?) So instead of trying to get it more in focus, create a soft, dreamy image out of this one by doing as follows.
After saturation, levels and smart sharpening duplicate the layer (using GIMP). On the bottom layer do a gaussian blur of between 25 and 30. Change the top layer's opacity to between 60 and 80% Flatten image and save. You're done!
Hope this helps

seems to me that this is underexposed, its causing what should be highlights to become midtones and makes the whole image look flat. i'd bump up the exposure by 1EV and see how that goes, and as PaulE said, crop out some of the black
