Default Lobby Bloom

I found this subject in one of the recessed walls of a Seattle downtown hotel this afternoon. How is my composition, my DOF and how would you rate the sharpness? Thanks in advance.

StarkShark,

first of all, I think technically it isn't quite a macro yet. You would need to be even closer and show more details of the flower and very little to no background at all. Then it is ok to put the center of attention right in the middle of the photo. In this case rule of thirds with some of the surroundings would have been good or a shot head on from above the flower.

I think it is underexposed and therefore the red is not as strong as it could be. However that can be easily fixed

What I do like is the reflection of light on the red petals. Sharpness is very good. Did you use a tripod at 1/30?

Hope this helps a bit. Learning myself .

/p

I agree its not quite macro and would love to have gotten a much closer shot. I was using my 50mm prime and it would not allow me to get in any closer using the AF on the glass.

No tripod was used. I was advised to hold my camera properly, bring my elbows in and against my body to create the "human tripod", then click. With that hand held technique you can get tack sharp pictures at 1/8.

I chose to under expose it by -1EV because at -2/3EV the petals started to look pale. I felt at -1EV it gave a much richer bolder red. I try not do any fixing in any of the shots I take. I figure that would force me to move and make better pictures.

Thanks for your input!

I would have loved to see more of the petals on the left side, that have been cut.
A higher angle would have avoided the shadow on the bottom petals due to the above ones.
A lower ISO would have avoided the noise on the stem.
I have a question for you........the prime lens that you have used, that must have an f number lower than 5, right, or did you want a deep DOF?
A macro could have been done with a very shallow DOF, with f1.8 or 2, focusing only on the central petals. That would have given you freedom to use a lower ISO.
But thats just me
Cheers.
