Just took this with my new Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lense, and a nikon R1 speed light. Pretty hard to get a very big DOF. At the min. focal dist. the lense will not step down to f2.8, but other than that any suggestions on better focusing or lighting. Learning good flash technics is harder than working the camera. I can tell you how I setup my flash for macro work. I will leave it to you to decide if you think you want to try it.

First I am a Canon user, but that makes little difference. LordV uses the lens that you have on his Canon 40D for 1:1 macro. I based my setup on his. If you have seen my macro shots on this forum, you have seen how this setup works.

Take your speed light off the hot shoe and put it on a bracket like this and use a diffuser

This will allow you to have fairly precise control over the lighting. This is a shot of LordV's 1:1 rig, he made his own using parts at his house. You could do the same if you do not wish to spend the money. Macrophotography by LordV - Canon Digital Photography Forums

Set the shutter speed to 1/250 sec, use iso 100-200, use f11, have the flash set to ETTL and dial in the exposure. I find that with that I need to underexpose anywhere from one stop to three stops.

I hope this helps.
