I think only if there's a point of interest in the back of the insect should you do this. examples would be if the insect was laying eggs or if there's a smaller parasitic bug attached to its back.

I am not completely convinced that this works….What do you think?
"What works" depends upon the perspective of the viewer, right?

You, as a viewer and long-time student and practioner of macro photography, see it as you do and you ask the questions you ask.

My perspective is relatively fresh, and from it, my response to this photograph is to ask myself whether (a) we have been invaded by aliens, (b) we (those of us living the day-to-day, common-life experience) need to expand our understanding of the diversity and incredible beauty of life, or, perhaps, (c) none of the above.

As a life-long student, and someone trained in psychometrics, I would immediately reject (c) as an obious mutiple-choice distractor aimed at those taking a wild-ass guess.

That leaves (a) and (b)..... and after sincere and extended contemplation of this image, I'll have to get back to you on that....(You wouldn't be Jeff Goldblum ingognito, would you??

I have edited the OP with full disclosure of the equipment and technique used in the taking of the shot.

I can see that to give a well thought and considered critique of a photograph complete information must be made available. I will strive to include this information with the photos that I seek feedback on in the future.

Thank you for the correction in this matter.

It is great to see a different angle/perspective for a change. This one highlights the incredible iridescent colours of the fly as well as its delicate wings and body hairs—and, you can still see the eye.

Good show!

Thanks for all the info too.
