Default Crain fly

Canon 50D, MP-E65 3:1, 580EX II flash defused in a flash rig, handheld.

So, is this a good crop?

There was a small crop, but not really any more than to better the presentation. It may have been four to one now that I think of it, but it was last summer and I don't wright that down….Probably should….The MP-E65 goes up to five to one magnification. It enables you to photograph the eye of an ant if you wish, and if the little bugger will stand still long enough

Thank you rengles

To the best of my knowledge Canon is the only one that offers a variable magnification lens in the SLR market. There are many Nikon users that have bought a used Canon body so they can use the MP-E65, and use Nikon for everything else.

If you plan to only do studio work on a macro station, you can go the bellows route, but that is far too big and unwieldy to use in the wild.
