Hi JennRetro; Tim provided an interesting perspective on your image. While it's hard to add anything to what he said, I also liked the contrast between the dark, Winter-like feeling he noted and the upward reach of the leaves along with the emergence of buds of new growth along the stem, portending Spring and perhaps happier and more colorful days ahead.

(Thanks, Tim, for explaining how to view this one! Still trying to figure out how things work here.)

PS - One thing I learned a few days ago is that if you view the image in your Flickr account, click on "Share" then "HTML Code" and then copy the code for medium size into your post here, the viewer will be able to see it immediately.

I found that if you click on the "All sizes .... " link at the bottom, you can see the image.

Your image looks sharp all around and the subject is well placed on a third line of the image. There is amble negative space to move all around the subject of the three leaves. Three is a wonderful number for these type of images. I also like your low to high camera position.

This image has a very dark feel to it, especially with the black & white treatment. The gray skies combined with the gray leaves (only slightly darker than the sky) sets a very subdued, somber tone. Perhaps that the feel you were going for with your "winter leaves" theme.

Right now, I prefer for more cheerful images, but that's just my state of mind right now. If you have the chance to go back to this same subject, you might try adding a little fill light onto the leaves. An off camera flash shooting up from camera left would be great. Otherwise, just crumble up a piece of aluminum foil, then smooth it out and wrap it around a piece of card board. That makes a wonderful reflect you can use to bounce the sunlight onto the underside of the leaves. It works as well as any you can buy and cost you pennies.
