Default Lily, Leaf, and droplets..

Hiya!

New to photography .. and learning a lot ! Wow -- there's a lot to learn. There's lots of great information on this site, and I've been trying to read as much as possible. Thanks to all who helped create that content.

I wanted to use the new 500D close-up lens with the 18-135mm kit lens that came with the camera to take a set of pictures of some new flowers in the house. Attached is a first attempt .. so I'm happy to hear any comments -- no matter how "blunt".

Here's a link to the picture on Flickr -- which includes the full set of EXIF information:
2011-0105-Lily1

Here's the short form of EXIF:
Camera: EOS Rebel T2i
Lens: 18-135mm plus 500D (via 67 to 72mm step-up)
Focal length: 85mm
Exposure: 1.6
Aperature: f/16.0
ISO: 400
Flash: Off, did not fire

Happy New Year!

Hi,

It's a very nice shot - nice and sharp with good depth of field and colour. My only criticism is the composition - I would have left out the green leaf or at least moved it slightly so that it doesn't poke into the flower.

cheers!
Ian

Smile hmmm... using lines..

Thanks for the comments!!

When commenting on this picture in another thread -- someone commented that the leaf and the lily seem to be "two photos in one". Your comment and this other comment both seem to be in the same vein.

I can see the point. It's not clear where the focus of the picture is .. which means it's not clear to the viewer, also. I wonder if I was trying to use the "line" of the leaf and the "line of the lily" to draw the eye to their intersection. Worse, I think I went out of my way to intersect the leaf and flower .. which created some of the confusion.

I think I'm learning and getting better .. since I can see clearer focus in some other shots. I'll need to think of the concept of using "lines" in the photo better.

Here, I was hoping the lines in the flower would draw the viewer in to the center of the lily. I'm fascinated by those little "hairs" that stick up in these lilies. Perhaps this is a better use of lines? Or, perhaps it's just less cluttered?
