Default 1st try

Just got a new t2i for Christmas. I've always been interested in photography but never really tried it beyond point and shoot at the kid's functions. I thought this would be the place to learn, so let me know how I could've done better...clueless here.

Hi and welcome to dPs!

It's a nice shot but I looked at the larger image on your flickr page and it has a lot of noise, probably due to the high ISO you used.
A lower ISO (400 or less) would produce less noise but require a slower shutter speed which means a tripod or other means of support. I assume you didn't use a tripod and that's why you bumped up the ISO.
Btw, it would help it you would provide the type of lens you used in your EXIF, i.e. was it taken with a macro lens.

I like the composition and colours.

cheers,
Ian

Though I didn't look at the larger image, I agree with all of Ian's comments. In addition, might want to think about cropping your images (as I assume from his comments, you may have done), but in this case, I might have tried to focus on the ornament that is more in focus and eliminate all or most of the red one.

But, like Ian, I really like the composition and colors. Please show us more of your work.
