Default Friendly Fly

Hi everyone,

I'm new at macro, so would love to get some feedback regarding some shots, and I could always depend on the folks here

Would love to get critiqued on technique and composition, i have a feeling the shot would look better if I cropped it. EXIF data also detailed here - it was a medium overcast day with patches of sunlight but nothing too extreme:

Exposure 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture f/3.5
Focal Length 100 mm
ISO Speed 100

Thanks in advance

ok, I'm telling you this as a viewer not as a photographer, so this comment is about what looks more compeling to my eye and not to real photographers

So, if I were you I would try to get closer next time, croping this is alright, but I would love to have a closer view at this fly
exposure and sharpness seem fine to me, even better than fine, but I don't see what did you wanted to say with this pic

P.S. I love your pics on flickr esspecially the baby with her parents and two old guys, really great photos!!

Nice shot, clarity, DOF & colour are all really good. Have you tried cropping it? I would definitely take quite a bit off the left and some off the right, tr keeping the fly/bee? on the right of the frame.

@boun - Thanks for your kind words re the other photos, much appreciated!

I agree about getting closer, but couldn't do it because of the limitations of the equipment i was using - the focusing distance was already at it's minimum. The only reason why I know this is because I tried getting closer in the next frame but ended up getting half of the fly body out of focus!

also...i'm not sure what i wanted to say either - i was just trying to get a nice colourful shot

@NgaiHill - I will try cropping it w rule of thirds when I get some time. i see what you mean about cropping out the left, thanks for your input as well.

I really like the quality of this image. I regret not commenting earlier. There is a composition problem here. You want to utilize the rules, and you need some space in the direction the subject is looking. But, the background on the left is, unfortunately, distracting.

I took the liberty of playing with your image a bit. I cloned some of the green background, rotated and cropped. A different vision, but it's still your capture!

Amazing...this is exactly the kind of direction I was looking for, thanks a lot for your time and effort Bruce!

Love the different take on it and I think it would take years for me to be able to see that out of the original image. I did see the problems with the original but had no idea it could be handled so much better with a crop and rotate.

Thanks again and also for your critique in the other shot i posted...

Naw, not years! Plenty of practice looking, taking, thinking... You have an excellent eye, it'll be there for you!
