Arrow Resistance is futile

by JEF 96, on Flickr

Hello guys, I've just decided to get into macro so I thought I'd search for some assistance; what better place than the friendly people on DPS I know nothing about macro so ANY advice and tips are most welcome.

This is my 2nd shot, my first was disappointing as it was serious lacking DoF. I use a Canon 100mm f/2.8 L and I welcome any tips and advice you can offer me.

The fly in the image was still alive, caught in a web in the corner of my window frame. I quickly collected some step ladders and balanced atop precariously. I couldn't see the spider (shame) but she was hauling the fly up into her parlour for evening lunch I presume. Speed was of the essence.

Many thanks in advance for your commens and advice...

Just reading your description of how you took the photo is enthralling and giving it that much more!

I think the photo is really nice, very sharp in places IMO.

I am no expert as I got into photgraphing only recently but would it have been possible to have more of the fly sharp? It appears as though the body level is sharp bu everything above (wings) and below (legs) is out of focus. Maybe playing with the f-stop would have helped that?

I must say those orange eyes are amazing! Really stand out! They made me wow Did you edit that part in post processing or is this out of the camera directly?

Nice capture. Very dramatic, I understand your lack of time for this shot, considering that you did very well.

Thanks guys, the eyes are as-is, I've only cropped it.
I did take other shots experimenting with f/stops. Idid get more detail on the fly, but I also got the curtains in the background

Here's another taken at the same time... more DoF but not as much light

Sweet

The reflection in the eyes does make them stand out in the original shot but I love the level of detail on the fly in this one

You have nice curtains?
