Default How should I crop this??

Took this photo of a butterfly on top of lavender, I think that all the purple surrounding it...takes the focus of the butterfly itself

How should I crop it to make this better and to put the butterfly as the main subject?

Lavender Butterfly

Exif Data:
Camera Canon EOS 40D
Exposure 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture f/4.0
Focal Length 200 mm
ISO Speed 400
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash Off, Did not fire

Thanks for reading!
Feel free to edit and play around with the photo and post onto this forum

I took the liberty of downloading the image from flickr, then I cropped and adjusted. I don't know how to have you view your image.

First, let me say that I like the original image. To me, the lavender at the bottom gets lost in the shallow depth of field quickly enough that it really just adds a contrasting color to the green at the top.

As much I hate to loose so much of the photo, this is probably what I would do to remove the lavender at the bottom.

Forgive the small size, this is a requirement of attachments on the forum.

I tried to get as close to the rule of thirds as possible, but there wasn't a great deal of width to work with.

In any case, great shot, thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful image! I like the portrait orientation, just thought a little cropped from the top would enhance it and put the butterfly in the top third a bit better. I also did a soft light layer and reduced the opacity to give it some color pop.

Let me know if you want me to take it down.

I like the image the way it is. My eye is drawn to the butterfly. You could maybe crop a like off the top like Susan suggested. It would be more in line with the Rule of Thirds, but like I said. I like it the way it is.

Thanks for sharing the great photo!

I would like to see a bit more as a macro rather than closup.
When I scaled image, I cloned out a bit of the out-of-focus flower in the upper right.
BTW, I love your shot!

I'm with Susan on this; just crop some off the top. There's nothing going on up there any way and cropping it off places the butterfly on the upper third line. Aside from that, the lines of the flowers are working for you, so I wouldn't mess with those if I were you.

OMG, Lee, are you agreeing with me AGAIN? You're starting to scare me; a photographer with umpteen years of experience who gives a "relative noob" with little film experience some credit (unlike a former member who was stuck in a time warp that left DPS in the wake of his own hissy fit).

I do enjoy reading your posts and have made many mental notes. I'm just happy to see that someone (other than Jim Bryant, I know he loves me, haha, he's a good friend of mine) with your experience actually doesn't think my opinion belongs in the toilet.

Keep it up and I might have to add you as a friend here. DOH!!!!
