I am a Geologist so put me in a place I can find rocks and I am a happy camper!
What I would like to know is, have I allowed too much light for this to work right? The rock is actually colourless and translucent, lit from the bottom. Should I dim the main whiteness down or would that remove the focus of the whole picture? Nikon D3000 1/25s 55.0mm f/5.6 ISO: 1600 |

I like this shot a lot. I am just a beginner, but it seems like part of the subject is out of focus: if turn your apeture up a few stops and compensate with shutter speed, it will bring more of the stems in the back into focus. Happy shooting.

Nice 1st attempt, However your focus was off, it appears that the center of the crystal may be in focus, but the nodes are out of focus. It appears there is also a reflection in the middle right hand side. For a static subject, your ISO is way too high and with the black background you could have used a smaller aperture and gotten everything is focus
Did you use a soft box or light box in this shot? Did you use a flash unit? So next time, 1. Tripod Mounted 2. Smaller Aperture, 3. Slower shutter, 4. Lower ISO 5. possibly difussed flash. Have a Blessed Day Michael.
