Klay you got a nice capture of the dandelion, processing looks fine for me however, I am distracted to the stems on the sides. The original as well looks good to me. You have to consider also the time of the day if you want a good exposure in your image. On your original picture, it looks blown up to me on the left side. Otherwise, job well done to your part on starting this adventure in photography...

Wow, you've only been doing photography for a month? I have to say that I am really impressed!! Your photo has a really nice composition and placement of the dandelion in the frame. I personally like the color you gave to it in the altered version, it's different and has a unique look. I do agree that the background stems look a bit distracting; you can see the touch of Photoshop a tad too much. But it's fun to play around and see what you can do with pics.
Pics on very sunny hours and days are sometimes hard because the brightest parts of the photo are very bright, and then you have very dark shadows. If you take shots when the light is less harsh, such as early morning or near dusk, or on a somewhat overcast day, the shadows won't be as striking. You will have a more even bright and dark tone to your picture, and changing things in PShop may give you better results. Hope you're having fun with photography!
