i really like how the violet itself looks but I'm not a fan of the changes in contrast and how it affected the background. A natural out of focus might have looked better. And I'm just a newbie but your angle should be based on a preplanned composition so however you want it to look is how it should be shot. In my opinion, a great photo comes more from composition anyway. In your case, you may have had an entirely different output from a 3/4 side shot or even angled down. But I like how you captured the flower in your angle regardless.

psanu,
I would agree with about the shooting angle. In my opinion any angle is right if that is what you are trying to show. That said, if you are trying to show more definition on the petals that would be a function of the lighting on the flower. Lighting from the front of the flower will give you a more 2d look. A more 3d lighting may result from light coming from the side of the petals raking over the subject. So it would really depend what you were hoping for. In regards to raw, it's best advantages are that you start with more pixel info and thus have a greater latitude to change colors and the such without posterization occurring. Additionally, the other advantage is that you can adjust your white balance with great ease. I like the painterly effect in your shot. Way cool! |
