please take a look and give me some feedback. i am using a kodak z710 (7mp). i was just goofing around trying to get a feel for the manual settings and didnt write down how i got this effect. i bounced the light from a regular desk light onto a white piece of paper on the wall.
i used a macro lens by bower i picked up online a couple of years ago and no flash. i didnt use a tripod since the one i have is very mus a peice of junk. i did try to adjust the color a little in photshop cs 2. the photo loaded is 200dpi so it has quite a bit of quality sacrificed. the original is 480 dpi saved in tiff format. |

That's an OK shot, although I might not have cut his ear off (that might hurt!).

lightsaber duel!
any suggestions (other than the ear). that pic was a test just to play around with the features of the camera. i have had it for several years and always used automatic settings. i am thinking of upgrading to around 12mp, but i wanna be sure i know the basics of manual controls first. |

I think I would try to get in closer to the head. Also maybe rotate him a little so you can get a little more DoF play.

That's a great subject to photograph! :-) I agree with Flea that you shouldn't have cut his ear off (ouch). Haha :P . I also suggest tuning up the saturation so the colors will pop a bit.
Wikipedia has a clear explanation of DoF (Depth-of-Field), with pictures > Depth of field - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

yea, gotta love yoda! i am still learning the manual controls and it is frustrating. i think i am expecting too much from 7mp. as an artist i have always been able to go straight to paper and get exactly what i wanted. it seems with photog i am limited by what may camera can do. time to upgrade!!
