I love this pic. I'm finding the background a little distracting though, the mantis isn't standing out as the center of focus as much as it could. I'm not sure what would look better, but play around with black, white, or maybe even a dark gray? Don't worry about parts of the mantis being out of focus, the head and forelimbs are what count with the mantis (the business end), right?

I think that background is distracting, a different color that contrasts more would be good, or if it's in the garden... use the regular background-- the bokeh will make a great background.

As for the DOF-- i'm just learning, but from what i've been doing, I'm surprised that an f32 would have such a narrow DOF. Hopefully someone can tell you what to do to help. I would think with a 50mm lens, f/5.6 or 8 (I keep my camera on aperture priority so i don't know about the shutter/ISO) you should get a clear image of the mantis with some bokeh. Keep trying!

I would not go for such a narrow aperture in this photo since you've already used a plain background. To really make the insect the main focus in the photo, I would take his picture without any paper background (he could be against a tree trunk, crawling on a branch, etc.,) and just use the widest aperture possible. With that, you will be able to achieve a nice background blur.

I do also find the background a little distracting. It is just an odd color to me!
