Default Into The Light

I took this shot, after seeing a similar attempt within Digital Photography School.
Shot on a Nikon D60 set on a tripod, at f29, with a 5 second exposure and an ISO of 100.

The image was lit using a household torch (flashlight).

All I did using Elements 6 was to improve the reds slightly and remove the flower stems.

I am new to this type of photography and really would appreciate constructive criticism on the shot.

Hi, Footski

That's certainly a different look, with the lighting, and the composition. For some reason, your Nikon was set on soft contrast, but I'm not sure that's what made the centers of each flower look out of focus some. Did you "paint" the blooms with the light, swinging it back and forth? If the Nikon did some refocussing during the 5 seconds, maybe that accounts for the slight soft focus.

Many thanks for your comments. I have checked the camera and the tonal compensation was set to auto, so it may well have softened the image. I have reset it to normal. Would this be better? I did "paint " the subject as you describe and shot the image in Raw.

Footski, we need a Nikon expert to weigh in on this. I have a new P&S Nikon, so my view is only guesswork. Focus is really iffy in a dark situation and if the camera is auto-focussing, so let's see what others say about Nikon.
